Things you can do with a Tablet

Ever since the iPad was launched, I've heard people ask the same question countless number of times; what can you do with it and why would anyone need it? Initially I wasn't sure about it myself but after spending some time with the iPad I got a fair idea of what one could do with the device, and more specifically what I could do with the device.

Now the iPad is no longer the only tablet around with several variants from the Android camp crawling out of the woodwork almost every other day. Even BlackBerry announced its very own tablet, the PlayBook, which plans to take the iPad head on. All this is good reason for people to know what these devices are meant for and what they can be used for. So here are a few things that you can do with a tablet.

Note that many of the things here can be one on a smartphone as well as on a notebook PC. But what sets a tablet apart is the way it does those same things. Also, contrary to what some people might think, the tablet is not a replacement for the notebook PC but rather is a device that complements it.

Google Mobile Phones Coming Soon (G Phone)

Google has been
lobbying the U.S. government for changes in wireless policy. While it did not
achieve as much as it wanted in the planning for the upcoming 700 Mhz spectrum
auction in January, it did push for the fact that consumers in the U.S. can buy
any phone and use it on any carrier in the future. Meaning, that when the
Gphone does drop, most likely you'll be able to use it on any carrier you
please. The Google phone will most likely be 3G as well, which means video
conferencing, yea you can't do that with the iPhone. For you iPhones users
though, would this be enough to make you switch?

The Observer of London is reporting that Google might be working with HTC and
mobile/telecom giant Orange to build a Google Mobile Phone, which could
possibly have Google software inside the device, and would be able to do many
of the web tasks smartly. The device, article speculates, could go on sale in
2008. (Of course, we would all have forgotten by then… if it doesn't happen.)
Orange and Google, both declined to comment.

Their plans centre on a branded Google phone, which would probably also carry
Orange's logo. The device would not be revolutionary: manufactured by HTC, a
Taiwanese firm specializing in smart phones and Personal Data Assistants
(PDAs), it might have a screen similar to a video iPod. But it would have
built-in Google software which would dramatically improve on the slow and
cumbersome experience of surfing the web from a mobile handset.

How Do 3D Glasses Work?

3D Stereoscopic glasses are nothing new. In fact you had them when you were a kid and probably didn't even know it. Remember the ViewMaster™ that showed all the cool Disney characters in full 3d? The ViewMaster™ allowed you to look at two pictures of the same thing taken from a slightly different view point and tricked your brain into seeing one 3d image.

In order to see things in 3D each eye must see a slightly different picture. This is done in the real world by your eyes being spaced apart so each eye has its own slightly different view. The brain then puts the two pictures together to form one 3D image that has depth to it.

Still want to know how do 3D glasses work? Keep reading!
Anaglyphic [ana·glyph·ic /"a-n&-'gli-fik/] adjective -- A stereoscopic motion or still picture in which the right component of a composite image usually red in color is superposed on the left component in a contrasting color to produce a three-dimensional effect when viewed through correspondingly colored filters in the form of spectacles.

The mode of 3D presentation you are most familiar with are the paper glasses with red and blue lenses. The technology behind 3D, or stereoscopic, movies is actually pretty simple. They simply recreate the way humans see normally.

Since your eyes are about two inches apart, they see the same picture from slightly different angles. Your brain then correlates these two images in order to gauge distance. This is called binocular vision - ViewMasters™ and binoculars mimic this process by presenting each eye with a slightly different image.

Now you're learning! Need to know more about how 3D glass work? Read on. The binocular vision system relies on the fact that our two eyes are spaced about 2 inches (5 centimeters) apart. Therefore, each eye sees the world from a slightly different perspective, and the binocular vision system in your brain uses the difference to calculate distance. Your brain has the ability to correlate the images it sees in its two eyes even though they are slightly different.

If you've ever used a ViewMaster™ or a stereoscopic viewer, you have seen your binocular vision system in action. In a View-Master, each eye is presented with an image. Two cameras photograph the same image from slightly different positions to create these images. Your eyes can correlate these images automatically because each eye sees only one of the images.

A 3D film viewed without glasses is a very strange sight and may appear to be out of focus, fuzzy or out of register. The same scene is projected simultaneously from two different angles in two different colors, red and cyan (or blue or green). Here's where those cool glasses come in -- the colored filters separate the two different images so each image only enters one eye. Your brain puts the two pictures back together and now you're dodging a flying meteor!

3D glasses make the movie or television show you're watching look like a 3-D scene that's happening right in front of you. With objects flying off the screen and careening in your direction, and creepy characters reaching out to grab you, wearing 3-D glasses makes you feel like you're a part of the action - not just someone sitting there watching a movie. Considering they have such high entertainment value, you'll be surprised at how amazingly simple 3-D glasses are.

The binocular vision system relies on the fact that our two eyes are spaced about 2 inches (5 centimeters) apart. Therefore, each eye sees the world from a slightly different perspective, and the binocular vision system in your brain uses the difference to calculate distance. The reason why you wear 3-D glasses in a movie theater is to feed different images into your eyes just like a View-Master does. The screen actually displays two images, and the glasses cause one of the images to enter one eye and the other to enter the other eye. There are two common systems for doing this:

Although the red/green or red/blue system is now mainly used for television 3-D effects, and was used in many older 3-D movies. In this system, two images are displayed on the screen, one in red and the other in blue (or green). The filters on the glasses allow only one image to enter each eye, and your brain does the rest. You cannot really have a color movie when you are using color to provide the separation, so the image quality is not nearly as good as with the polarized system.

The red and blue lenses filter the two projected images
allowing only one image to enter each eye.

At Disney World, Universal Studios and other 3-D venues, the preferred method uses polarized lenses because they allow color viewing. Two synchronized projectors project two respective views onto the screen, each with a different polarization. The glasses allow only one of the images into each eye because they contain lenses with different polarization.

How to Start a Computer in Safe Mode

Learning how to start a computer in Safe Mode is a must for Windows users. This feature can save you from software conflicts and enable you to perform better virus scans.

What Is Safe Mode?
Safe Mode is a way of operating Windows with only a few programs running in the background. Think of it as a bare-bones version of Windows that activates only the programs necessary to get your computer running. Safe Mode is very useful for troubleshooting problems with your computer, especially if Windows isn't starting up for you or if your computer frequently crashes. Lots of nasty viruses and malware can cause your computer to crash, and some utility programs or software updates can make Windows unstable. Most of these programs start running automatically when Windows boots. Safe Mode allows you to start Windows without initializing these programs, so you can run software and remove the malicious files.

Entering Safe Mode
It's very easy to reboot in Safe Mode. For Windows XP and Vista users, it's virtually the same process.

When you turn on your computer, you'll see a black screen that has the Windows logo on it before your desktop loads. While this screen is visible, tap the F8 key repeatedly if you're using Vista or hold the F8 key down if you're using Windows XP. This should load a black screen with gray text with the options of starting Windows normally or in Safe Mode.

You'll notice that there are a few different versions of safe mode. Most users should choose regular Safe Mode. The option -Safe Mode with Networking' allows you to access your local network or the Internet. -Safe Mode with Command Prompt' is for advanced users and provides access to an MS-DOS prompt. To choose a Safe Mode, use the arrow keys on your keyboard to select one of the options, then hit Enter.

Fixing Problems in Safe Mode
Once you're in Safe Mode, you can scan your computer for viruses, defragment your hard drive, uninstall recent software additions or use System Restore to revert your computer to a more stable environment. Some software won't run while you're in Safe Mode, so it should only be used to diagnose and repair issues with your operating system.

Turning Safe Mode off is even easier than getting into it. Once you're finished with your troubleshooting and repairs, just restart Windows as you normally would and your system will boot with all of its programs.

4 Advantages of social networking sites

There are people who stand for social networking sites while others are against. There are advantages for users but also disadvantages.

I use some social networking platforms and I´m gonna talk about the advantages of social networking sites:

1 - Some social networks are good opportunities to find a job - Nowadays the big companies have specialists on human resources that search for profiles in these kind of sites to recruit new collaborators. If you´re looking for job you can create a profile (a serious, professional and complete profile) and you might be discovered and recruited by a company. You can describe your capabilities and publish some of your works - and with a little luck you can find a job.

2 - You can meet new people - social networking sites are the perfect spot to neet new people online. With the help of advanced search tools you can find users who have the same interests you do and that can be the starting point of a great friendship and/or relationship. Many people meet online and then stabilish a relationship in real life - getting married, having children, etc.

3 - You can overcome your timidity - Contacting with other people through the internet becomes more easier for shy people. Shy people can overcome this using social networking platforms to stabilish contacts. Later the interaction it´s more easier because they have already talked and interacted online.

4 - You can promote your site or business for free - If you have a business or site you need to promote you can do it by creating a business profile on some of these networks. You can load images, your logo, etc. into your profile and it will be visible for your virtual friends and all the users who visit your profile. You can also put topics on groups related to your business and stabilish new contacts that can lead to sales, subscriptions or anything else.

She Came Along To Me

Ten hundred books could I write you about her
Cause I felt if I could know her
I would know all women

And they've not been any too well known
For brains and planning and organized thinking
But I'm sure the women are equal
And they may be ahead of the men

Yet I wouldn't spread such a rumor around
Cause one organizes the other
And sometimes the most lost and wasted
Attract the most balanced and sane

And the wild and the reckless take up
With the clocked and the timed
And the mixture is all of us
And we're still mixing

But never never never
Never could have it been done
If the women hadn't entered into the deal
Like she came along to me
And all creeds and kinds and colors
Of us are blending
Till I suppose ten million years from now
We'll all be just alike

Same color, same size, working together
And maybe we'll have all of the fascists
Out of the way by then
Maybe so

But never never never
Never could have it been done
If the women hadn't entered into the deal
Like she came along to me

Panasonic introduces first camcorder that takes 3D – the HD SDT750

Japan’s Panasonic has launched the world’s first 3D consumer camcorder it claims, with a special 3D conversion lens which creates two signals simultaneously. When the 3D Conversion lens is not attached the Panasonic HDC-SDT750 shoots full 1080p HD.

This is really an existing HD camera being converted to 3D by adding this specially-designed 3D conversion lens . The two lenses each use 960 by 1080 pixels, so around half full HD for each eye.

The Panasonic HDC-SDT750 will be available in the US from October with a suggested retail price of $1,400.

Chris Rice, Senior Product Manager, Imaging, Panasonic said “Incorporating Panasonic’s professional broadcast technology and bringing it to an easy-to-use consumer model, the SDT750 makes high-quality 3D video content a reality in the home.”

The system also has something called a Time Lapse Recording feature, so you can record things like a rising sun or a flower growing and then watch the results at an accelerated speed. What it does it takes a frame every 1 second or every 10 or 30 seconds. It can even leave it as long as 2 minutes. So when a scene is recorded at the 1-second interval setting, a 10-minute sunset scene can be played back in 10 seconds, and is also available when the 3D conversion lens is attached.

The Panasonic SDT750 offers a 5.1-channel audio recording sound system that uses five microphones, so when voices are recorded from the front, right, left and back are played on a 5.1-channel home cinema system, users are surrounded by clear, detailed sound that makes them feel as if they are right in the middle of the action.

Playback using a Panasonic VIERA 3D TV is done by connecting the 3D camcorder to the television simply using an HDMI cable.

China launches new global positioning satellite

A rocket carrying the fifth of a planned array of 35 orbiters blasted off from the Xichang space launch center in Sichuan, southwest China, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

Beijing started a drive to end its reliance on the U.S. Global Positioning System in 2000, when it sent an experimental pair of positioning satellites into orbit.

China's necklace of satellites aims to provide navigation, time and short message services in the Asia-Pacific region before 2012 and will be capable of offering global navigation by 2020, Xinhua said.

The system, codenamed "COMPASS," will be crucial for the transport and oil exploration industries as well as for weather and disaster forecasting, telecommunications and public security, the news agency said.

Teen creates free Internet application for iPhone

London: A 15-year-old boy managed to dupe Apple by creating an iPhone application that connects to the Internet for free but it is no longer available.

To access the web through the iPhone costs around 13 pounds a month.

Nick Lee designed a application which at first glance appears to allow users to change the colour of their screen. It was charged at less than a dollar to upload from the Apple iTunes online music store.

However, the application contains a hidden code that allows people to use their iPhone as a modem and access the Internet without paying, the Telegraph reported.

The application was removed as soon as news of its true nature appeared online. Those who downloaded it, however, can keep enjoying its benefits.

"I'm going to use this little gem of an application to my heart's content. I'm typing on it now, and I'm going to see just how much data I can use all afternoon. I was able to get download speeds of roughly 2.5 Mbps," an online user who downloaded the application before it was removed said.

Yahoo hosted 24-hour 'hacking' event in India's tech hub

Global search engine Yahoo hosted a non-stop 24-hour "hacking" event on Saturday noon in this tech hub where about 300 whiz-kids used its web tools and services to develop new applications, a company official said Friday.

"About 300 developers across India participated in the 24-hour hacking event, which involved using our web tools, services and application programming interfaces (APIs) to innovate new solutions for our global netizens," Yahoo India Research and Development Head Shouvick Mukherjee said.
Being held for the third consecutive year, the "Open Hack Day" aimed at nurturing the open innovation ecosystem in India and drive domain expertise in the internet space.

"Open Hack Days enable talented developers to create better, more relevant and more social experiences on our network. The spirit is to leverage our open APIs and developer tools to create newer applications," Mukherjee said.

Clarifying that the web portal's hacking concept was different from the popular perception of gaining illegal entry into computers and network resources with a malicious intent, Mukherjee said the developers would get a lifetime opportunity to play with Yahoo! Query Language (YQL).

"Our type of hackers will use the YQL to create and use their own table definitions, enabling the language to bind to any data source through the SQL-like syntax and fetch data," Mukherjee noted.

The language platform also enables developers to query, filter, update and combine data across the web.

Developers can also write new applications using the Yahoo Application Platform (YAP) in an open, self service web applications environment.

"Participants allowed to write applications front-end in HTML (hyper text markup language, CSS (cascading styling sheets), Java Script and in the language of their choice," Mukherjee pointed out.

With YAP, a developer can get in front of the largest daily audience on the web.

Yahoo began Hack Days as an internal event 12 years ago to bring its developers together and expanded into regular events in its offices the world over.

The annual event was also held in Sunnyvale in the U.S., London, Brazil and Taiwan during the last decade.

Youtube and Google Video Tricks

As we all know that none of the video sharing sites provide a link to download their videos. So we will have to do some tweaking and play around to download the videos. Here are some ways to download any video from the internet , they are based on the common hack (Right-click -> "Save Target As" OR copy the link into your download manager, but change the file extension to .flv)

Method 1: For Firefox Users - Install the VideoDownloader Extension from Mozilla Add-ons website - It downloads all embedded objects on a webpage including the video clips. This is very easy for beginners.

Method 2: One of the easiest ways is to copy your video URL and paste it on KeepVid Lite. When you click submit, you will be provided with a link to save the video as an FLV file.Using these tricks you can easily download videos from Youtube or Google Videos or Metacafe.

Now some more questions that arise are:

How do I play FLV files on my computer - They dont open with windows media player or winamp or itunes or real player ?

You can download free FLV players to watch FLV files locally. A good FLV player has a simple and easy-to-remember name - FLV Player. Another nice alternative is the Riva FLV player. Try them out.

How do I split a large FLV file into smaller playable video clips?

This is the most common question among video enthusiasts - they want to split a large FLV video file into smaller chunks for editing or resharing only the interesting tidbits on the internet. To break an FLV file, get the free FLV Parser - a tiny command-line tool to split FLVs into pieces. Its intended use is to convert a large FLV into a series of shorter FLVs based on a series of millisecond-based timecodes. Using the -s switch will split the audio and video of the outputted files; the audio track will be extracted as a series of MP3 files, and the short FLVs produced will have no audio track at all.

How to convert FLV videos to Windows AVI or Quicktime MOV or 3GP formats ?

The free Simplified Universal Player Encoder & Renderer software from Super can convert FLV files to practically any other video format including MP4, MOV H.264, AVI, ASF or Flash SWF animations. Super video convertor.

How do I convert my AVI, MPEG, MOV, 3GP movie clips back to FLV format ?

Say you complete editing your movie in Windows Movie Maker or Avid and now left with an MOV file that you want to convert to FLV. Just get the free Riva FLV encoder and relax. The Riva encoder even lets you select parts of the video that you want to convert to FLV and crop the rest.

I have three small video clips that I download from Google Videos and now want to join them into one single video -How do I merge FLV files ?
There is no free software that lets you join FLV files other than the expensive Macromedia Flash Professional. However, here's a simple trick to join several flv video files - convert individual flv files to avi using Super [as mentioned above], then join the multiple Avi files into a single avi file using free VirtualDub and finally convert this avi back to FLV using Riva FLV encoder. Its done.

How do I watch Youtube Video on my iPod, PSP or Television ?

Again we'll make use of the Super Video Encoder mentioned above. Just convert the FLV file into a corresponding format (like Apple iPod or Sony PSP or MPG) and transfer it to your gadget

Apple iPhone 4 catches fire

Apple's latest iPhone 4 caught fire while being attached to a computer through the Apple USB cable. Quite dangerously, the phone's user suffered minor burn injuries on hand.

As if poor reception signals weren't enough to spoil the iPhone 4 party, the iPhone 4 got burned and even melted USB cable.

Reports says that a customer had brought the phone to the store for repair,
but the device was in the shape of beyond repair.

A local Apple store clarified that the cause behind fire was a defective USB port. The edge of the device had got unmanageably hot. Apple told the store that it seems the fault is with defective USB port, and not due to any design flaw.

Following complaints, Apple recently admitted that iPhone 4 has been facing poor signal strength and poor reception problems.

Story behind Big names like Apple, google and Adobe

How did Adobe get its name
Adobe is the name of a river. One of the founders of Adobe, John Nack, lives in Los Altas in California. This river runs behind his house. This is how Adobe got its name.

Story behind how Apple got its name
The founder of Apple Inc, Steve Jobs used to work in an Apple Farm. When he decided to start his business, he joked with his friends that if they did not suggest a name for his company he will then name it as Apple Computers. Obviously his friends could not come out with a name and hence Steve named it as Apple Computers. The rest is history.

What does Google Mean?
This is an interesting one. Larry Page and Sergey Brin are the founders of Google. Can you believe that the Google got its name because of a spelling mistake?
When they were studying in Stanford University, they worked on a project report to create an online Search engine. Their aim was simple. When someone searched for a keyword, the result should fetch huge number of relevant sites. In fact they wished for Googol number of results. Yes Googol represents a number which is 1 followed by 100 zeroes. Therefore they wanted to name it as googol. But when they submitted their project report for funding to an investor, the investor gave a cheque which was payable to ‘Google’ instead of Googol. So that was a spelling mistake.
But Larry and Sergey decided to keep it as google and thats how the name came about.
